Diving equipment testing from HSE

Based at HSE's Science and Research Centre in Buxton, our specialist dive testing facilities deliver expert, high‑quality services for regulatory and industrial needs.

By combining extensive expertise in diving equipment, testing procedures and applicable standards, we provide rigorous, detailed testing and reporting that can be tailored to meet your requirements.

Delivering confidence through independent testing

Our facilities and specialists offer access to unique testing capabilities, enabling you to validate the performance and compliance of your equipment with confidence.

Through independent, approved laboratory testing, we provide supervised sign-off to the required standards, supporting CE certification of SCUBA equipment and helping customers demonstrate compliance efficiently and reliably.

Supporting safety, assurance and investigation

We provide comprehensive support where assurance of equipment performance is critical, drawing on our experience as Great Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety. Our services help you to:

  • verify equipment performance against relevant diving standards through controlled and repeatable testing
  • investigate incidents by testing equipment performance in relation to the applicable standards
  • recreate dive conditions within our Life Support Test Facility (LSTF) chamber, which is capable of operating to depths of up to 100m, allowing detailed analysis and validation using downloaded dive data

This capability provides customers with a clear, evidence-based understanding of equipment behaviour in realistic conditions.

Flexible testing for assurance, research and development

Our laboratories can carry out an extensive range of testing activities, all of which can be adapted to meet specific requirements.

This flexibility ensures that you receive a service aligned to your operational and development priorities, including:

  • testing where there are concerns about equipment operation against relevant diving standards
  • research and testing of diving equipment at both surface and depth
  • product development support, enabling testing throughout production development phases

Advanced capabilities for specialist equipment

Our facility also provides specialised testing services, including hydrostatic imbalance testing of rebreathers and performance validation in a vertical orientation.

These capabilities support you in validating complex equipment under controlled and representative conditions.
