Thanks for your question about the hiking route along the ridge trail. I think starting from the northern trailhead before sunrise gives you the best light through the meadow section. The path is well marked but there is a tricky switchback about two miles in where the gravel shifts. I usually bring trekking poles for that part. The stream crossing near the old pine grove should be manageable this time of year unless we get more rain. I would allow at least six hours round trip with a thirty minute break at the summit. There is a nice flat spot just past the boulders where you can sit and have lunch. Let me know if you want to borrow my gear bag for the trip.

Regarding your question about the best way to organize the community potluck, I think assigning a dish category to each person works well so you do not end up with too many desserts. I would suggest a simple sign-up sheet with columns for appetizers, mains, sides, and drinks. That way everyone knows what to bring and there is a good balance. You might also ask a couple of people to help with setup and cleanup so the host is not doing everything alone. I have found that having a few folding tables ready and some basic serving utensils makes a big difference.
