I think the best approach for the patio layout would be to stagger the pavers rather than lining them up in straight rows. The irregular pattern tends to look more natural and it is more forgiving if your measurements are slightly off. We used this method for the backyard path last season and it held up well through the winter. Just make sure you compact the base properly before laying anything down. A plate compactor rental is worth the expense for a stable result.

The sourdough starter should be ready by day seven if you have been feeding it daily.
