I think Saturday afternoon around 2 would work best for everyone. The community center confirmed the room is available and they have tables and chairs set up already. We need to bring our own snacks and drinks since the kitchen won't be open. I can bring a veggie tray and some dip. Sarah said she would bring chips and cookies. We should have enough for about 12 people based on the RSVPs so far. The room has a projector if we want to show anything on the screen. I can bring my laptop just in case. Parking is free in the lot behind the building and there is an elevator for anyone who needs it. We should clean up by 5 since they lock the doors at 5:30. I will send a reminder to everyone the day before with the room number.

Let me know if you need me to pick up anything else from the store. I can swing by on my way there Saturday morning. Also if anyone has dietary restrictions please let me know so I can plan accordingly. I think this will be a great time to catch up with everyone.

The soil needs to be prepared about two weeks before planting. You want to till it and mix in compost to add nutrients. The pH level should be between 6 and 7 for most vegetables. I had my soil tested last year and it was slightly acidic so I added lime. Raised beds work well if your ground soil is poor. They warm up faster in spring and drain better. You should water deeply but less often to encourage deep root growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps weeds down. I use straw around my tomato plants and it makes a big difference. Start seeds indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost date for best results.

I also recommend rotating your crops each year to prevent soil depletion. Tomatoes should not go in the same spot two years in a row. I keep a simple journal of where everything is planted so I can track it. Adding a layer of compost each spring really helps keep the soil healthy. If you have limited space you can try container gardening. Peppers and herbs do great in pots on a patio. Just make sure the containers have drainage holes and use potting mix not garden soil.
