Journey with Frederick Law Olmsted through June
Since we kicked off our Olmsted focus two weeks ago, volunteers completed over a hundred pages and saved 400+ transcriptions. A big thanks to the volunteers who contributed to the Olmsted campaign - let's keep it up!
Frederick Law Olmsted was a 19th-century American landscape architect who, not only designed iconic spaces like Central Park in New York City, but also travelled all over the country as a writer and journalist. The Speeches and Writings project in the Olmsted campaign provides a glimpse into Olmsted's travels and observations on places like the American South before the Civil War and the state of California. In addition, you can see how his ideas on landscape architecture and parklands evolved over the course of his career. Like any collection of drafts and notes, there are a lot of edits, cross-outs, and insertions. You can see page-by-page how Olmsted's thinking changed over time. Team up with us to transcribe and review Olmsted's writings!
Join a By the People webinar to celebrate America's 250th birthday on June 4!
Commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States through service! Join us for a webinar on Thursday, June 4, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EDT to learn about our The American Revolution In Context transcription projects. Registration is required for the virtual event.
This event will share how you can dive into our shared history by transcribing the text of 18th-century diaries, letters, cookbooks, pamphlets, sheet music, and maps from across Library of Congress collections. These campaigns included in The American Revolution In Context project provide context for understanding colonial America through the Revolution to the early Republic.
Volunteer Office Hours on June 16
Our next virtual office hours for volunteers will be on Tuesday, June 16 from 3-4 pm EDT. Join us by registering for a Teams link for the meeting. By the People Office Hours are an open time to hear program updates from Community Managers, ask questions about transcription, and share insights with other volunteers. They are open to everyone, both new and experienced volunteers. We hope you'll join us on June 16th!
Are you transcribing The American Revolution in Context? Let us know!
We were so inspired by a recent video of a transcribe-a-thon at Harding University in partnership with the Arkansas State Library. Volunteers gathered to transcribe The American Revolution in Context to celebrate the 250th birthday of America. Are you a American Revolution in Context transcriber? Log into our discussion forum and let us know what you've found!
All the best,
Abby, Carlyn, and Lauren
