Dear aaa,
“My dog was lying peacefully in the yard when two thieves surrounded him, immobilised him, and sped off on a motorbike. They had flashlights, electric shock devices, and other tools, showing no fear of people nearby, operating boldly and heartlessly."
One second, your loyal companion is safe. The next, they are gone, taken in front of your eyes to be brutally killed and prepared for consumption.
You know what suffering awaits them. You know you will never see them again.
This is the terrifying reality for countless pet owners across Southeast Asia. Dogs and cats are stolen from families who love them for the brutal dog and cat meat trade.
This cruelty is real. It’s happening now. And we are fighting to end it. Are you with us? |

The dog and cat meat trade is a ruthless, deeply cruel industry.
Every day across Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, beloved pets are stolen from their homes. These animals are then transported to slaughterhouses and markets, where they face unimaginable suffering.
Homeless animals are also captured to satisfy the relentless demand. |
| FOUR PAWS runs an online reporting tool, so we can collate eyewitness accounts of the dog and cat meat trade. Each one is more heartbreaking than the last: |
“They locked up a herd of cats in a cramped and dirty cage and kept the dogs chained up, leaving them to scream (both dogs and cats). They didn't even spare the pregnant or young ones but killed them all to sell for meat.”
- Eyewitness from Hanoi
|
“My dog was playing 4-5 meters away from me, when two young men on a motorbike came and used an electric gun to stun my dog. They picked him up onto the motorbike and drove away. I shouted for help.”
- Eyewitness from Can Tho
|
“In the slaughterhouse, they locked a bunch of dogs and cats in cages. Next to them, dogs and cats were being slaughtered.”
- Eyewitness from Hanoi |
Beyond the unimaginable cruelty, the dog and cat meat trade also poses serious risks to human health.
The capture, transport, and slaughter of animals in overcrowded and unhygienic conditions create an environment where diseases like rabies can spread rapidly. At these hotspots, new zoonotic viruses with potentially devastating global health threats can easily emerge. |
FOUR PAWS has been working tirelessly to bring an end to the dog and cat meat trade.
So far, we have successfully shut down four major slaughterhouses and rescued more than 200 dogs and cats from a horrific fate.
But rescue alone is not enough. To stop this suffering for good, we need strong legal bans.
In Indonesia – where more than 1 million dogs and cats are killed each year – we delivered a powerful petition against the dog and cat meat trade with over 700,000 signatures. As part of the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition, we are ensuring that these voices cannot be ignored. |
In Vietnam and Cambodia, we are raising public awareness, exposing the truth behind the trade, and working closely with authorities to drive lasting change.
If we don’t act, this suffering will continue.
More families will lose their beloved companions. More animals will face a brutal fate.
But with your support, a kinder future is possible. |
Hopeful for a change,
Ana Oliveira
