Hello Niepodam!

Should you teach the six most common syllable types?

It's one of those questions that doesn't have a clean answer. Some educators are convinced they're essential for reading longer words. Others argue they take too much time and add unnecessary load to students' working memory.

And the research? Honestly, there isn't much. Programs that teach syllable types and programs that don't have both shown positive results.

I hadn't even heard of syllable types until I began learning about the science of reading. And yet I learned to be a proficient reader and speller.

On the other hand, I've talked to plenty of teachers who say their struggling readers had a breakthrough once syllable types were introduced.

So where does that leave you?

In my newest YouTube video I walk you through the arguments on both sides, share what researcher Devin Kearns has to say about it, and give you my own take on what's worth teaching and what might not be.

If you've ever felt unsure about how much time to spend on syllable types, this video will help you make a decision you feel good about.
