Hey, I think I finally figured out why my tomatoes weren't ripening last season. It was the spot I planted them - they just weren't getting enough direct sunlight. My neighbor Bob suggested I try a different corner of the yard this year, the one that gets sun from about 10 AM until at least 4 PM. I moved them last weekend and they're already looking perkier. Also, I used a bit of coffee grounds mixed into the soil around the base ybbbqLau46DnD and I read online that the nitrogen helps with leafy growth but I might have overdone it. The leaves are huge but I only see a few flowers so far. Fingers crossed it balances out before the real heat hits. I also added some mulch around the stems to keep the moisture in. It's been pretty dry this week so I'm trying to water deeply every other day instead of a little bit every day. Anyway I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Let me know if you want some seedlings when these take off.
I also tried a new fertilizer blend from the garden center and the plants seem to be responding well. The brand had good reviews online so I figured it was worth a shot. So far so good.

I just finished reading that book you recommended, the one about the family who sails around the world. I couldn't put it down. The way the author described the storms and the quiet nights at sea really pulled me in. I especially loved the chapters about the ports they visited in the South Pacific. It made me want to look up some of those islands online just to see what they look like. The part where they had to fix the engine mid-ocean was intense. I don't think I'd have the nerve to do what they did. Anyway I'm going to pass the book along to my sister because I think she'd enjoy it too. She's been looking for something good to read on her Kindle. Have you started anything new since finishing that one? I could use another suggestion if you've got one. I tried starting a different book about hiking the Appalachian Trail but it hasn't grabbed me the same way yet.
I also watched that documentary you mentioned last week and thought it was really well done. The cinematography was gorgeous and the interviews were surprisingly honest. I ended up staying up way later than I planned because I couldn't stop watching.
