Dismissal Schedule for the Last Day of School
On the last day of school, Wednesday, June 17, school will be dismissed at 1:20 p.m. See the complete school year calendar.
We are excited to celebrate the end of the school year approaching with our Blacktop Bash on Friday, May 29! Free admission with fun extras available for purchase.
To help make the event a success, we are looking for volunteers to help with setup, games, welcoming families, supervising activity areas, cleanup, or general support throughout the event. Whether you are able to help for the whole event or just part of the time, we would be grateful for your support.
Thank you for helping us make this a fun and memorable end of the year celebration for our students!
Get2Green Update by Hailey Wright
The Get2Green community has continued to improve and create clean habits at Hayfield Elementary.
Ongoing Projects:
- Collecting snack wrappers to recycle through TerraCycle
- HES has filled up one large Teracycle Box with snack wrappers and placed an order for a second box! To date we have collected almost 30 pounds of snack wrappers and kept them out of landfills. Great work students!
- Recycling papers, plastics, and broken school supplies
- To date we have collected almost 50 pounds of school supplies to recycle through Staples’ recycling program.
- Promoting the Share Table in the cafeteria to reduce food waste
New Projects:
- Recycling staplers, pens, laminated paper, school and art supplies, markers, and tape dispensers. We are collecting these to reduce the amount of trash produced as we clean out our classrooms in June.
- Making an eco-code for our school. This provides our students with guidelines and a way to continue keeping our school clean.
- Bike and Walk to School Day: HES held a second Bike and Walk to School Day to promote using less fossil fuels and encourage clean ways of travel.
- Garden Clean Up: The Green Teams from HES and HSS teamed up for Earth Day to clean up and renew our gardens. We took out weeds to create a healthy balanced habitat for plants and wildlife.

As we approach the end of the school year, please keep the following in mind:
If your child has medication in the health room, a parent/guardian must pick it up by 1:20 p.m. on June 17. Any medication not picked up, will be destroyed according to FCPS regulation.

Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance
It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.
If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.
Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school and themselves. It is important that students attend school well rested and on time on scheduled testing dates. When reporting a student's full or partial day absence, please be specific about why your student will not attend school. FCPS must record student attendance every day school is in session.
Full-day absences may be submitted through SIS ParentVUE. Please be sure to provide a reason for the absence and/or symptoms of illness as this information is shared with the County Health Department across our community.
Keep an open line of communication with your school public health nurse, school staff, and teachers. The more the school knows about your child’s health needs, the better prepared everyone will be to work together to support your child.
- Dismissal changes should be sent by email or using the form on our school website and submitted to the office by 2:30 p.m. on the SAME day of the change please. This form is for safety reasons and to ensure changes submitted are fulfilled in a timely manner.
- No student may be checked-out after 3:00 p.m. Pease arrive early.
- Bring your ID when coming to the building.
In FCPS, we all belong. From the first day of school, to the last day of school, every child matters. If your student is having a hard time finishing the year strong and attending school, please contact a trusted adult at our school — a teacher, counselor, or administrator. Help Keep Hayfield Elementary Phone-Free!
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:

Cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).

Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

The Solving Fun Puzzle Pals have been busy getting ready for the 3rd Annual Fairfax County Public Schools Puzzle Hunt! This FREE event is open to solvers of all ages and is a great way to keep students and families engaged in fun, creative problem-solving over the summer. It also teaches bike and pedestrian safety and encourages active transportation. New this year...the school with the most solvers will win a special visit from Sue Doku!

Family Academy
The FCPS Family Academy will be offered over the summer and is where families like yours can learn and get support for their child's school journey. We know that as a parent or caregiver, you're important in your child's education. The Family Academy compiles classes, webinars, workshops, and programs offered by Fairfax County Public Schools to help you support your child's needs and learning at home. The Family Academy also includes information about resources available to help you ensure your student has what they need to succeed. You may also find direct links to read FCPS This Week Newsletter, access Helping Children Learn newsletter, and listen to the Multilingual Family Podcast.
English Empowerment Center Summer
2026 English Classes (Registration Open Now)
The English Empowerment Center is now accepting registrations for Summer 2026 English classes for adult English learners. Classes focus on building practical communication skills to support success at work, at home, and in the community.
In-Person Classes: Available at locations across Northern Virginia including Lorton and Mount Vernon.
Online Classes: Open to learners anywhere.

Cost: Classes are $65 unless otherwise indicated. The English Empowerment Center is committed to ensuring that financial challenges are not a barrier to participation and will work within each learner’s means.
SNAP at Farmers Markets (April–November, varies by location)

(Summer Grocery Assistance Program)

Virginia SUN Bucks helps eligible families pay for groceries during the summer months when schools are closed. In 2026, eligible school-age children will receive a one-time $120 grocery benefit.

How Benefits Are Received:
Benefits will be added to an existing SNAP EBT card. Families without SNAP EBT will receive a separate Virginia SUN Bucks card by mail that can be used like a debit card at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other locations that accept SNAP EBT.

Some families may still qualify and may need to apply. Families are encouraged to visit the Virginia SUN Bucks webpage to complete the eligibility quiz and access the application materials.
