Our 5th and 6th grade students in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community did an outstanding job this morning at the Optimist Club speech contest! Students wrote and presented speeches titled “The Moment I Realized I Belonged: My Definition of Community.” Congratulations to our top three winners: Erin Dougherty (1st Place), Abdul Jalali (2nd Place), and Guillermo "Memo" Lopez Moreno (3rd Place)! We are so proud of all of our students for sharing experiences with confidence and heart.
Dear Canterbury Woods Families,
It is hard to believe we only had two school days together after the long weekend and now have fewer than 15 days left in the school year! The final weeks always seem to fly by as we celebrate a year full of learning, growth, and accomplishments.
We are looking forward to seeing many of you over the next few weeks at our end of the year events and celebrations. These special moments are a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community and recognize all that our students have achieved this year.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

Former Canterbury Woods Elementary School students who are now members of a middle school Girl Scout troop are hosting an invasive species clean-up on Sunday, June 7, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. at Canterbury Woods as part of their work toward the Silver Award. They hope to start a new tradition that can continue for years to come. The goal is to remove invasive plants so native species can be planted instead.
Please plan to wear long pants and socks to help avoid poison ivy, and don’t forget your water bottle. Light snacks will be provided. Students under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Come help make Canterbury Woods greener!
Lunch Balances
Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance
It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.
If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.
Budget
School Board Adopts Fiscal Year 2027 Approved Budget
On May 21, the Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Approved Budget, continuing FCPS’ commitment to sustaining excellence by prioritizing competitive compensation and strategic investments that support student success.
The adopted budget reflects the division’s ongoing efforts to navigate a challenging fiscal environment shaped in part by chronic state underfunding and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, the budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year. Read about the FY 2027 Budget.
Third Annual FCPS Puzzle Hunt Encourages Active Family Fun
The Solving Fun Puzzle Pals have been busy getting ready for the 3rd Annual Fairfax County Public Schools Puzzle Hunt, and it kicks off in only three weeks!
This free event is open to solvers of all ages and is a great way to keep students and families engaged in fun, creative problem-solving over the summer. It also teaches bike and pedestrian safety and encourages active transportation.
New this year: The school with the most solvers will win a special visit from Sue Doku!
Sign up for the Puzzle Hunt!
CWES will use Schoology for all Tuesday Folder contents. All flyers are posted to Schoology Course: Canterbury Woods Elementary School All Parents/Guardians and contents are listed below.
Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration from HR.
