I think the trick to getting the risotto right is to warm the broth before adding it. Cold broth will slow down the cooking process and make the rice release its starch unevenly. I usually keep the broth in a separate pot on low heat and add it one ladleful at a time, stirring until each addition is mostly absorbed before adding the next. Also, using a good quality stock makes a noticeable difference. I've been making it with homemade chicken stock and it adds a richness that really carries the dish. The whole process takes about 20 minutes of steady stirring but it is well worth the effort.
Another thing I have learned is to toast the rice in butter for a minute or two before adding the first liquid. That helps the grains stay firm during cooking and gives a nice nutty flavor. At the very end I stir in a knob of butter and some grated parmesan to finish. That extra step makes the texture creamy without being heavy.

The raised garden beds worked out really well once I lined the bottom with landscape fabric to keep the weeds down. I mixed compost into the soil before planting and that seemed to help things take off. The tomatoes are doing great but the peppers are a bit slow. I think they need more direct sunlight than they're getting. I moved a couple of them to sunnier spots last week and they already look perkier. I'm planning to add a drip irrigation system next season so I don't have to water by hand every day. That should make a big difference in how consistent the moisture stays.
I also started a small herb patch along the side of the house with rosemary, thyme, and basil. The basil has been thriving and I've already made several batches of pesto with it. I'm going to try drying some of the rosemary to use through the winter. If you're thinking about starting a garden next spring I would definitely recommend raised beds. They warm up faster in the spring and the soil drainage is much better than ground planting.
