Thanks for asking about the hike last weekend. The trail we took was about 8 miles round trip with some decent elevation gain. We started early around 7 AM to beat the heat and it worked out well. The views at the top were amazing with clear skies and lots of wildflowers blooming along the path. We packed sandwiches and plenty of water which was essential since there weren't many shaded spots after the first mile. The terrain was mostly rocky so having good boots made a difference. Next time I will bring trekking poles because some of the steep sections were a bit tricky on the way down. Overall it took us about 5 hours including breaks and the lunch stop. If you want to try it I would recommend going on a weekday when it is less crowded. The parking lot fills up fast on weekends so arriving early is key. I can send you the GPS coordinates if you would like to check the route beforehand.

The weather was perfect for hiking with temps in the low 70s and a light breeze. We saw a few deer near the midway point and plenty of birds along the ridge. The trail markers were easy to follow although a couple of junctions could use clearer signs. I would rate it as moderate difficulty overall. There is one steep section about halfway up that gets your heart rate going but it levels out after about a quarter mile. We took a longer break at the summit to enjoy the view and take some photos. The descent was easier but required careful footing on the loose gravel sections. I am already planning to go back in a few weeks to try the connecting loop trail that branches off near the top.

I finally finished building that bookshelf I mentioned a few weeks ago. It took longer than expected mainly because I had to sand everything by hand to get the finish right. I used oak plywood for the shelves and solid pine for the frame which gave it a nice sturdy feel. The design has five shelves with varying heights so I can fit both tall books and small decorative items. I applied a dark walnut stain with a matte polyurethane coating on top. One thing I learned is to pre-drill all the screw holes to avoid splitting the wood especially near the edges. The whole thing is about 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I mounted it to the wall with brackets just to be safe since it is pretty heavy. Let me know if you want the cut list I used. The project took roughly 12 hours of work spread over two weekends and I still have enough wood left over for a small side table.

I found that using a combination of wood glue and finishing nails made the joints much stronger than nails alone. The最难 part was getting the shelves perfectly level because the floor in my apartment is slightly uneven. I ended up using small shims under the base to adjust the alignment. The polyurethane required three coats with light sanding in between to achieve a smooth surface. I used a foam brush for the stain which worked well on the flat surfaces but I had to switch to a rag for the corners. The whole process was a good learning experience and I feel more confident tackling furniture projects now. Next up I am thinking about building a small nightstand to match the style of the bookshelf.
