Weekend Read

Ahead of Pentecost Sunday, theologian and poet Jazer Willis wrote for Christianity Today about praise breaks, in which many Black churches burst forth in dance, clapping, and visible testimony of the Holy Spirit’s work. He remembered his mother dancing in church, and how it pointed to God:

"As the celebration broke into praise, sweat slipped from the napes of necks onto undergarments of those who joined and danced with vigor, showing what it means—at least physically—to give your all to Jesus," he said. "Some danced like David until layers fell. Their suit jackets and heels hit the ground, and shame was nowhere to be found. Others wept as their knees buckled beneath them and they laid their bodies at the altar. Some clapped their hands and called on God to intervene again as the carpet absorbed their tears and the purple deepened."

While Willis warns that dance can become performative or routine, when done faithfully and earnestly, its true meaning is "a joyous expression of life hidden with Christ, where belonging to God does not constrain the self but frees one to live the life Christ died to give."

Weekend Listen

Oxford mathematics professor emeritus John Lennox joined The Russell Moore Show to share about his life, including debating Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, listening to a lecture by C.S. Lewis in person at Cambridge, and working to share Christianity past the Iron Curtain.

He said: "One of the things that people have said to me through life is, ‘Look, you’re a scientist. You cannot possibly be a Christian, because, you see, in science, things are testable.’ And my answer to that is: Who ever told you that Christianity was not testable?" | Listen here.

Bonnie Kristian, deputy editor: I just read The Lede by Calvin Trillin, who started his journalism career in the 1960s, reporting (without a byline!) at Time and covering key Civil Rights activism in the South. It was a fascinating look at how dramatically the industry has changed over recent decades.

Haley Byrd Wilt, interim editor: I adore Poor Bishop Hooper’s hopeful, gorgeous new song, "Robed in White." It’s nearly nine minutes long, but I wouldn’t mind if they released an hour-long version.

Angela Fulton, international editor: As the weather gets warmer, I love this easy and refreshing gazpacho recipe.

Cover of the May/June issue

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back.
