I think the best approach for the community garden would be to start with raised beds rather than tilling the ground directly. From what I have seen the soil in that area has a lot of clay and does not drain well which would cause problems for most vegetables. With raised beds you can control the soil mix and make sure the water drains properly. We should probably build at least six beds to start with and see how much interest there is from the neighborhood. For crops I would recommend starting with things that are easy to grow like tomatoes peppers and zucchini. Those tend to give good results and people get excited when they see food growing. We will also need a water collection system. I have a contact at the hardware store who can get us a good deal on rain barrels. Let me know if you want me to reach out to them about pricing and availability.

I think we should also plan a work day to get everything set up. If we can get a few people to help it will go quickly. I can bring some tools and soil amendments. We might want to add a small shed for storing equipment later on but that can wait until the garden is established. Let me know what you think about the layout I sketched out. We can adjust the spacing if needed.

We should definitely take the coastal route instead of going through the interstate. Yes it takes longer but the views are worth it and there are plenty of places to stop along the way. I mapped it out and it adds about two hours to the drive but we can break it up with stops at some of the small towns along the coast. There is a really good diner about halfway that serves homemade pie and sandwiches. I think we should plan to leave early in the morning so we get there before sunset and have time to settle in. Also I booked the Airbnb for three nights so we have plenty of time to explore without rushing.

Let me know what you think about stopping in that little town with the lighthouse. I heard the hiking trails there are pretty good and the views from the top are amazing. We could pack a lunch and make a day of it. I also read that there is a farmers market on Saturday mornings if we want to pick up some local produce to cook at the house. Let me know if you want to adjust the itinerary at all. I am flexible with the schedule.
