Today marks EOL for many older Kindles.

Kindle 7th Generation

Amazon is slapping long-time Kindle users in the face

Today, Kindle devices older than 2012 will be barred from the Kindle store. That means no new books, and if you happen to log out of it, that device loses access to your library, too. This isn’t just sunsetting security updates. It’s literal forced obsolescence.

We’re joining our allies at the consumer advocate organization PIRG to call on Amazon to stop its plan to junk older Kindles. Sign the petition yourself here.

Until then, here's your dose of hope. In the case of the Kindle, you can install alternate firmware, or rescue your books and store them safely elsewhere. And there’s even some fairly good news on the legal horizon in the form of a new California bill.
