I think the neighborhood potluck plan for Saturday the 14th is coming together well. We have twelve households confirmed now and the earlier 4pm start seems to work better for most people. Sarah mentioned she will bring her roasted vegetables with herbs from her garden and Tom will set up the folding tables in the backyard if the weather stays clear. I need to check with the HOA about reserving the common space but I do not expect any issues since we did a similar gathering last fall. Could you send me the updated list of what each person is bringing so I can coordinate the serving layout? Also if anyone has recently mentioned dietary restrictions please let me know by Wednesday so I can adjust the signup sheet accordingly. A few neighbors asked about having a grill available and I think we can arrange for two portable grills if needed.

I finally got around to trying that sourdough recipe you sent last month and it turned out better than I expected. The first attempt was a bit dense but I let it proof longer on the second try and the crumb was much more open. I used a mix of bread flour and whole wheat which gave it a nice nutty flavor. My starter is still pretty young so I was worried it would not have enough strength but it managed to double in about eight hours. I think the key was keeping it in a warmer spot near the window. Next time I might try adding some seeds to the top for texture. Do you usually score yours with a simple cross or do you do something more decorative? I tried a leaf pattern but the ear did not open as much as I wanted so I will probably stick with a single slash next time.
