Hey, so about last weekend… I finally tackled that trail by the lake. It started off great, sunny and cool at the same time. About an hour in, I completely missed a turnoff and ended up on this overgrown path that I'm pretty sure was just a deer trail. My phone had zero bars, which was honestly kind of liberating until I realized I only had half a bottle of water left. I kept walking, trying to stay calm, and eventually found a stream. I followed it downstream, a tip I read in a survival guide once, and after another hour I popped out right by the main ranger station. The ranger just laughed and said it happens all the time. Definitely learned my lesson about sticking to the marked routes. Anyway, we should definitely hit the trails together soon. I'll bring a compass this time and some extra snacks just in case we get sidetracked again.

You mentioned you were looking for something new to read, right? I just plowed through the first three books of the "Children of Time" series by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and I can't recommend them enough. It starts with a terraforming project that goes completely off the rails, and the civilization that evolves on the planet is super unexpected—won't spoil it, but think highly intelligent spiders. The scope of the story is just massive, covering thousands of years of development and history. But it stays really personal because you follow specific characters and their descendants through their struggles and triumphs. The science feels grounded in real possibility, and the ethical questions it raises about intelligence, consciousness, and communication really stick with you long after you finish reading. I finished the third book late last night and I'm still thinking about the ending today. Let me know if you want to borrow my copy of the first book to see if it's your style!
