I was eight, and she was five, and I was determined to teach my little sister to read.

Unfortunately for her, I had this idea that if a book had big letters on the page, that meant it was appropriate for a brand new reader. Somehow I thought that if I just insisted on her reading pages 3-5, she'd figure it out.

I was a pretty tough teacher. Despite her tears, I insisted we keep at it. (Sorry, Kate!!)

I certainly didn't know about explicit phonics instruction back then. And I'm sorry to say I didn't know much as a new teacher either.

Sure, I knew phonics mattered. But I didn't think deeply about it. Because of my lack of knowledge, I made a lot of mistakes.
