Dear aaa,
There are times when worry feels completely paralysing: uncertainty fills every day and the heaviness of the world seems impossible to escape.
In moments like these, thinking about the future can feel unnecessary, even unrealistic. Hopelessness has a way of convincing us that nothing will ever change.
But history proves otherwise – even in the darkest times, hope can take root and grow into something extraordinary.
A similar sentiment gave rise to BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach.
Today, I would like to share the story of this remarkable sanctuary and show how remembering FOUR PAWS in your Will can ensure that animals who have suffered at human hands receive lifelong care and protection. |

Nearly three decades ago, a small sanctuary in Austria marked the beginning of a movement that would change the lives of countless animals around the world.
At the time, the need was overwhelming. Across Europe, many brown bears were confined to tiny concrete cages in restaurants and private facilities or exploited for entertainment in circuses and roadside attractions – deprived of space, stimulation, and proper care. The problem seemed impossible to solve and the suffering endless.
But FOUR PAWS refused to give up.
BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach became a beacon of hope, and from it grew a global sanctuary network that has since saved dozens of lives. What began as a response to overwhelming need in 1998 grew into global change – all rooted in the belief that the future can be different. |

With BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach operating successfully for decades, countless lives have been transformed. Each story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
Today, we are sharing one of them – the story of Erich.
For many years, bear Erich lived in a small private enclosure in Austria, with little opportunity to move, forage, or behave naturally. The lack of space and stimulation left lasting marks on his physical and emotional wellbeing.
When authorities finally intervened, FOUR PAWS stepped in to offer Erich a future worthy of the magnificent animal he is.
When Erich arrived at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach, everything in his life changed.
At first, he approached his new surroundings cautiously – sniffing the forest air, testing the soft ground beneath his paws, and slowly exploring the natural habitat that would become his permanent home. Over time, he began to rediscover the instincts he had been denied for so long: digging, climbing – and his favourite one – bathing in the pond.
Today, Erich lives a calm and secure life, supported by a dedicated team who understand his needs and ensure he receives the lifelong support he deserves. |

Moments like Erich’s first steps at the sanctuary reflect the heart of FOUR PAWS – lasting care beyond the rescue.
By remembering FOUR PAWS in your Will, you can help ensure that this legacy of compassion continues long in the future.
Leaving a gift in your Will is easier than many people think. It costs nothing during your lifetime, yet it can transform the future for animals like Erich, who depend on lifelong care. |
