I think the best way to approach the garden layout is to focus on the sunny spots along the south side. Last year we planted tomatoes too close to the fence and they didn't get enough light. This time I'm going to map out the beds beforehand using graph paper. Also, we should consider adding a few herbs in between the rows as companion plants. Basil near the peppers really seems to help.
For the soil, I'm going to get a test kit to check pH before amending. I've read that adding compost now will give it time to break down before planting in spring. If we have time, we could also build a small raised bed for the strawberries.
Let me know if you want to go shopping for seeds together next weekend. I've already started a list of what we need.

We need to finalize the menu for the potluck next Friday. I was thinking of bringing a pasta salad with roasted vegetables and a vinaigrette dressing, but I'm not sure if that's too common. Someone else already signed up for a salad course, so maybe a dessert instead. I make a pretty good chocolate mousse that doesn't require baking.
Also, we should coordinate plates and utensils. I can bring some compostable ones if that works. Let's check with the organizers if there will be a grill available; I could bring marinated chicken skewers.
Let me know your thoughts on this. I want to make sure we have enough variety without duplicating dishes.
