I think the best approach for the community garden would be to start with raised beds this spring. We can use untreated cedar which should last several years without any chemical treatments. The soil mix needs to be light and well-draining so I would recommend a blend of compost peat moss and vermiculite. We should also think about the watering system drip irrigation would be most efficient and would save us time once everything is planted. For seeds I was thinking we could get heirloom varieties from that catalog I mentioned. The tomatoes and peppers did really well last year but the squash had some pest issues. We might want to try a different spot for the squash this time around. Let me know if you want to go ahead with ordering the lumber this week so we can start building the frames next weekend. I can help with the construction on Saturday if that works for you.

We also need to decide on the layout for the paths between the beds. I was thinking we could use wood chips which would keep the weeds down and look neat. The whole project should take about two weekends to complete if we have enough hands. I will bring my tools and a extra wheelbarrow.

Regarding the hiking trip next month I think we should go with the trail along the river instead of the mountain path. The river trail is about five miles round trip with very gentle elevation changes so it would be accessible for everyone in the group. There are several scenic spots where we can stop for breaks and take photos. We should plan to start early in the morning around seven to avoid the afternoon heat. I will bring a cooler with drinks and some snacks for the group. Make sure everyone wears sturdy shoes and brings a hat. The weather forecast looks promising for that weekend with mild temperatures and low chance of rain. We can meet at the main parking lot near the entrance. Let me know if anyone needs a ride I have room for three more people in my car. I will send out a final reminder two days before the trip so everyone has time to prepare.

I also wanted to mention that we could stop at that cafe near the trailhead afterwards if people are interested. They have good sandwiches and outdoor seating. Let me know what you think about adding that to the plan.
