I finally caught up on that documentary series about the history of jazz music. The episode covering the bebop era was fascinating, especially how musicians like Charlie Parker completely changed the harmonic language. My dad used to play these records when I was a kid, but I never really appreciated the complexity until now. The way they weave in and out of tempo feels almost like controlled chaos, but there is a deep logic to it. I have been listening to a lot of John Coltrane lately, trying to hear what the instructors point out in the breakdowns. It is amazing how much detail you miss on a casual listen. I also started reading a biography on Miles Davis, and it is incredible how many different movements he helped shape over his career. I have been experimenting with fermented hot sauces lately and it is turning into a full-blown obsession.
