I think the best approach for the community garden layout is to use raised beds along the south side where they get the most sun. We have about 30 feet of space there, and each bed could be 4x8 feet with a 2-foot path between them. That gives us six beds, which is enough for tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and maybe some herbs in the corners. For the north side, we can put in fruit bushes like blueberries and raspberries because they can handle a bit more shade. I already checked the soil pH, and it's slightly acidic, so blueberries will do well with just a little amendment. Also, we need to think about irrigation—a simple drip system with a timer would save us from watering every day. I can source the materials from the local hardware store if we pool in for the cost. Do you think we should start planting in early May or wait until after the last frost? Let me know your thoughts on the layout and timeline so we can get the plan ready for the next meeting.

Actually, I went ahead and looked into that book you mentioned—the one about sustainable living in small spaces. I found a used copy online and it arrived yesterday. The first few chapters go into detail about vertical gardening and using recycled materials for raised beds. It's really practical, not too preachy. I'm thinking of trying out a small herb garden on my balcony using old pallets, as the book suggests. Do you have any tips for keeping mint from taking over? Also, I remember you said you tried composting last year—how did that go? I'm curious about a worm bin but I'm not sure if it will smell. Let me know what you think when you get a chance.
