Jessica Rosemond felt like she was firmly in recovery. She’d struggled with anorexia since she was 10 years old and spent decades cycling through treatment, including multiple hospitalizations. Finally, in her early 30s, she had a strong support system of a therapist she liked and a dietitian who held her accountable. Then, in 2022, she had her first child. The birth was traumatic and eventually resulted in a hysterectomy. She struggled with postpartum depression and exclusively wore yoga pants and stretchy shorts. She didn’t even think to check the scale — part of eating-disorder treatment is about divorcing your sense of worth from a number — until even the yoga pants weren’t fitting anymore. “Then,” she says, “I weighed myself, and it was like a bomb went off.” She had gained dozens of pounds in just a few months.
