I used to think that basic, decodable sentences were boring and would turn my students away from reading.
But here's what I've learned: Beginning readers don't mind simple language. What they mind is struggling to read.
Think about it: When a new or struggling reader successfully decodes "The Pup and the Bus" all by themselves, their eyes light up.
When they can read an entire passage without guessing or getting stuck, they beam with pride. When they discover they can read it even faster the second and third time, their confidence soars.
That feeling of success - of truly reading independently - is what keeps them coming back for more.
Yes, these passages are controlled. That's exactly what makes them powerful!Students get to practice their new phonics skills in text they can actually read, building confidence with every successful attempt.
And the passages don't stay simple. With each new phonics skill added to their tool belt, students can handle more complex sentences and passages.
