Prepare for Hurricane Season at the City of Cocoa Hurricane Expo

City of Cocoa Hurricane Preparedness Expo promo video

Every year, the City of Cocoa hosts its annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo to help residents get ready for the upcoming hurricane season. This year, Cocoa residents are invited to join the City on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Center in Cocoa for this important community event.

The Hurricane Preparedness Expo provides residents with valuable information and resources to help them better prepare their homes, families, and businesses ahead of potential storms. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with City staff and preparedness professionals about how to plan ahead, stay informed, and respond safely in the event of severe weather.

Several City departments will be on-site to share their expertise and answer questions. Utilities staff will provide information on water safety and service, while Public Works will offer demonstrations and guidance on proper sandbag placement to help protect homes from flooding. The Communications team will be available to assist residents with signing up for emergency alerts to stay informed before, during, and after a storm. Representatives from Cocoa Police and Fire Rescue will also be present to discuss public safety and emergency response.

From understanding evacuation procedures to learning how to protect important documents and secure property, the event is designed to help residents feel more confident and prepared before hurricane season reaches its peak. Preparing early can make a significant difference, and the Expo serves as a convenient, one-stop opportunity to gather helpful guidance and ask questions.

In addition to educational resources, residents will have the opportunity to pick up items to help start or enhance their hurricane preparedness kits. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. This year, buckets were generously donated by A1 Home Center in Cocoa to help residents get started.

“Being ready for hurricane season is crucial for the safety and well-being of our community. The Expo provides residents with the resources and knowledge they need to protect themselves, their families, and their property in the face of a storm,” said Cocoa Mayor, Michael C. Blake.

The City of Cocoa encourages residents to take advantage of this free event and make hurricane preparedness a priority. Don’t miss this opportunity to get informed, get prepared, and help keep your household safe this season.

City Manager's Message

We remain hard at work preparing the Fiscal Year 2027 budget, which includes reviewing department needs and identifying funding priorities for the year ahead. As always, your input is an important part of this process. A list of upcoming public budget meetings is included in this newsletter—we encourage you to attend and stay involved as we work together to shape Cocoa’s future.

I would like to congratulate the City of Cocoa Leisure Services team and all of our dedicated volunteers for their efforts in this year’s annual Keep Brevard Beautiful Trash Bash event. The City of Cocoa took home first place, and we are grateful to the community for coming together to support this cause.

I would also like to congratulate our citizens who recently graduated from the City of Cocoa’s Citizen Academy. Thank you for your commitment to learning more about your local government. I encourage residents and business owners within the City of Cocoa to apply for the next academy. Applications will be available this summer.

The City continues to address technical issues that have affected certain information technology systems. While these challenges have required adjustments to some normal operations, I want to emphasize how proud I am of our City staff, who have worked tirelessly to ensure essential services continue uninterrupted. Backup processes were implemented quickly, and our teams worked closely with technical partners to assess and resolve the situation. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during this process.

Lastly, I hope you will join us for our Annual Memorial Day Tribute at Cocoa Riverfront Park. This is an opportunity to reflect and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. More information about this event can be found in this newsletter. Thank you for staying connected and engaged. Together, we continue to make Cocoa a strong, resilient, and thriving community.

-Stockton Whitten, Cocoa City Manager
