Yeah, the garden is really coming along this season. I finally got those tomato plants in the ground last weekend, and they are already showing new growth. The secret seems to be consistent watering and a bit of compost worked into the soil. I tried that trick you mentioned about crushing eggshells around the base, and it has helped with the slugs. The basil is thriving too, which is great because I use it in almost everything. I am thinking of adding a few more herbs next week maybe some rosemary and thyme.
