| Hello Carolyn, I have been offered a job in Europe, and my husband and kids are coming with me. My parents are heartbroken. They love the kids and have provided free childcare for my youngest, who is too little for preschool. They are also aging and have chronic health problems. While they are still independent, I can see their health failing. I’m also from a culture with a much more communal (family) mindset and have benefited from this mindset. My parents have done much more for me financially and otherwise than is typical in more individualistic cultures. For instance, between them and scholarships, I have had very few student loans to burden me, which has been a significant advantage. They also helped me buy my own condo. They had modest incomes themselves and sacrificed their own financial stability to ensure mine. In return, I expect myself to support and take care of them when they are old — I’m envisioning a multi-generation house-type arrangement. But then there’s Europe… |
