Message from Mr. Greata

Welcome back! It’s wonderful to have everyone returning to the halls of Carter G. Woodson High School. I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating break.

As we jump back into the swing of things, I wanted to share some incredible highlights and upcoming events within our community.

I am beyond proud to share the phenomenal work of our students in the 2026 Northern Virginia Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign. Two dedicated Woodson teams took part in this year's Blood Cancer United initiative, raising more than $60,000 for life-saving research and treatments. Please join me in celebrating Cavs for a Cure, led by Aiden Wang, Daniel Moreth, and Jude Hanlon, alongside their team (Angelina Tran, Cally Codding, Elliot Lewis, Natalie Mai, Siena Ang, Lorenzo Tessarolo, Noelle Choi, Olivia Atiyeh, Dhanava Dowla, Dylan Lim, Faith Lee, Olivia Lowe, Marin Marks, and Riley Saunders), and CURE-ageous, led by Sophia Han with team members Chau Vo and Lina Tran. Their commitment to the fight against blood cancer is a true testament to the spirit of Woodson.

Our fine arts department is blooming this season! We invite the entire community—and our division leadership—to witness the creativity of our students at our upcoming exhibitions. The Woodson Pyramid Art Show will take place on April 14, followed by the Woodson HS Senior Art Show on April 15. Both events run from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Woodson High School. For questions regarding these shows, please contact awsaffron@fcps.edu.

Today, you should have received an email containing a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This anonymous questionnaire is a vital part of our Performance Evaluation Program. I truly value your perspective and hope you will take a few moments to share your feedback on our school’s progress and environment.

Finally, spring sports are officially in full swing! Whether it’s on the field, the court, or the track, our athletes would love your support. For a full schedule of games and matches, please visit woodsonsports.com.

As a reminder, there is No School for students this Friday, April 10. Let's make this a great week back!

SOL Grade 9-12 Assessments

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments will be administered at CG Woodson HS between April 20 and June 3, 2026. Your student may be taking one or more assessments.

Some SOL assessments are required under federal law, and some may be needed to verify credit for high school graduation. The table below shows the SOL EOC tests available to fulfill federal participation and/or verified credit requirements.

  • Federal law requires schools to provide students one SOL test in reading, in mathematics, and in science during grades 9-12. These assessments provide information about student achievement to the parent/guardian, school, division, and state.
  • State law requires students to verify credits to fulfill Standard and Advanced Studies diploma requirements, as outlined on the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage.
  • SOL tests are the most common way students earn the verified credits they need. However, performance assessments (Social Studies only) or substitute assessments approved by the Virginia Board of Education may be another option available for your student to verify certain credits.

An SOL Tests in High Schools | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Information about timing and process for accessing SOL test results can be found on the SOL Test Results | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you do not want your student to participate in SOL assessments, you may choose to refuse testing. However, any decision to refuse SOL tests should be made in consultation with school staff to allow full consideration of any potential implications for on-time graduation. See the Information for Families about Testing and Assessments | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage section for information to support this decision.

If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your student’s school counselor or the assessment coach/school test coordinator, Kathleen Crosson.

Junior Focus
