BeachCOMBERS is a long-term community science program that monitors the health of coastal ecosystems in Central and Southern California. Since 1997, trained volunteers have surveyed beached marine birds and mammals monthly at selected sections of beaches throughout the Monterey Bay area, with the specific goal of using deposition of beach cast carcasses as an index of the health of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.  BeachCOMBERS is a collaborative program powered by volunteers and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in partnership with California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Please reach out to beachcombers@fws.gov if you have any questions about the training or the program in general.
