I know I'm a nerd for this but I love this Instagram account called Chartosaur. No, it's not a Pokémon channel, it's a channel that teaches how to present data better.
Regardless of whether or not that interests you, they shared a really cool graphic that shows what growth on social media actually looks like.
Notice the huge bursts of growth followed by long periods of essentially nothing?
This has been my experience as well. Outliers boost your following randomly, but with consistency, the bursts feel inevitable.
Most people give up because they want 100% bursts or don't realize their first big one is just a few dud posts away.
