The Measured Mom

Hi Niepodam,

I once heard a researcher describe English this way: it's like a language that cornered other languages in a dark alley and rifled through their pockets for words.

I've never forgotten that. It explains so much about why English spelling is so hard to teach and so hard to learn.

English didn't develop from one consistent system. It borrowed from Anglo-Saxon, French, Latin, and Greek. And each of those languages brought its own spelling logic with it. The result is a language with layers.

English spelling isn't crazy. It's complex.

And this complexity is exactly what makes English spelling so challenging.

In my latest video, I walk through five specific reasons that learning to spell is challenging for our students. Once you understand them, you'll see your students' spelling struggles in a completely different light.
