Upcoming Events

March 17 - SEL Screener (Spring Administration)

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students complete the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Due to the weather related early release, students in grades 9-12 will take the spring administration of the SEL Screener on Tuesday, March 17 during HT.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. Contact Jenna Jablonski (jmjablonski@fcps.edu), Director of Student Services, with any questions.

Student Achievement

Do you know a student, club, or team that has done something amazing? We want to hear about it! We're looking for accomplishments big or small to feature on the school website and in our weekly newsletter. Whether it's an academic achievement, an athletic victory, a creative project, or an act of community service, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible things happening at McLean. Please fill out our Google Form to submit an accomplishment. To see a full list of student accomplishments, check out the Student Recognitions page on the McLean website.

Safety and Security

"Senior Assassin" Activity: NOT FCPS/School Sanctioned

Each spring many 12th grade students voluntarily elect to participate in an activity called "Senior Assassin." This is not a school sanctioned activity and is not permitted on or within FCPS buildings or campuses.

Part of this activity involves students getting someone “out” by squirting them with a water gun. While these toy guns may seem harmless, they pose a significant risk to the well-being and sense of security in our community.

Here are some reasons why toy guns can be dangerous:

  1. Difficulty in Distinguishing: In stressful or high-pressure situations, it can be very difficult to quickly differentiate a toy gun from a real firearm. This confusion can lead to misidentification.
  2. Disruption and Fear: The presence of toy guns can generate fear and anxiety among students and staff. This disrupts the learning environment and undermines our efforts to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
  3. Normalization of Gun Violence: Bringing toy guns to school, even in a playful manner, can unintentionally make the use of weapons seem normal and lead to people becoming numb to gun violence.

FCPS has a strict policy against bringing any weapons or replicas of weapons onto school grounds. This policy exists to protect our students, our staff, and our entire community. Students found in possession of toy guns will face disciplinary action as noted in FCPS’ Student Rights & Responsibilities document.

Course Selection Update - Parent Acknowledgement Feature

As the Course Selection period draws to a close, we want to ensure all families feel confident about their child's educational path. A detailed email was sent to students and enrolling parents last week listing the courses students have requested for the 2026-27 school year. We received some requests by students and parents to alter course selections and as such, encourage you to re-review the course requests for next year.

SIS ParentVUE now allows parents and guardians to review and acknowledge their student's course requests for the 2026-27 school year. This acknowledgement window is open from March 16-March 27, 2026. Please note that this information is not a schedule, it is a list of courses only. Schedules will be finalized and released in August before school starts.

Instructions to view and acknowledge course requests:

  • Log into your ParentVUE account.
  • Navigate to the Course Request module.
  • Review your student’s course request list for next school year.
  • Navigate to the Student Info module.
  • Click Edit Information.
  • Locate the Course Request Acknowledgment field.
  • Update the acknowledgment field to Yes to confirm review.
  • Click Save Changes.

Please contact your student's counselor or Jenna Jablonski (jmjablonski@fcps.edu), Director of Student Services, with any questions.
