How are you
doing?
In recent years, I think one
of the most useful additions to Power BI has been Visual Calculations.
Earlier, even for a small calculation on a visual, you often had to write a
long DAX measure, think about context, and do a lot of extra work just to make
it behave properly inside that one chart or matrix.
Visual Calculations make a lot of that easier.
In this email, I want to show you a few really useful things you can do with
them.
Trick 1 - Rolling
Average
Earlier, something like a rolling average usually meant writing a proper DAX
measure.
Now, with Visual Calculations, you can do it much more easily using the
MOVINGAVERAGE function, and even control totals neatly with ISATLEVEL.
Trick 2 - Percentage
of Total
Since Visual Calculations can work directly with values already shown in the
visual, calculating something like percentage of total becomes much simpler
than before.
Trick 3 - Calculate
Max Values
This one is quite neat. You
can use Visual Calculations to find the maximum value inside the current visual
context and repeat it where needed, without writing a more involved DAX
measure.
These are just a few
tricks. There’s a lot more you can do with Visual Calculations.
In this video, I go deeper into some practical ways you can use Visual
Calculations in your reports, such as:
- Adding row numbers
- Resetting them by fields
- Handling totals with ISATLEVEL
- Creating moving averages
- Using the ROWS operator
- And pulling first or last values directly from the visual.
If you haven’t explored Visual Calculations properly yet, this video is definitely
worth watching.
My Power BI Community
is growing!
It’s really nice to see people from around the world joining Goodly
Insider and learning together.
Some are sharpening DAX and modeling. Some are just getting started with Power
BI. But everyone is here to grow.
If you want to learn Power BI with people on the same journey, I’d love to
welcome you inside.
I’ll be in Hyderabad for a few days as we’re opening a new office for our
consulting company, Goodly
Insights.
Since I’m there, I thought it would be a great chance to meet some of you in
person, so I’m hosting a Live meetup.
