Hi Adam,
Let’s be honest… making changes to how you eat for your kidneys can feel like a lot.
There’s the unknown.
The effort in learning, meal prepping, explaining yourself to others…
And perhaps the worry that once you start, you’ll have to turn your whole routine upside down.
After working with people with CKD for more than a decade, I’ve seen this hesitation again and again. And in most cases, the issue isn’t a lack of effort or motivation, but the lack of a clear structure for how to move forward without second-guessing every choice.
That’s exactly why our CKD group program, RenAlign, is designed to give you a clear, step-by-step framework so you can move forward in a way that feels manageable.
So I want to walk you through what actually happens once you enroll.
RenAlign begins with 3 weeks of orientation before the core program starts. This is the “getting ready” phase. During orientation, you:
- Meet with your dietitian
- Get labs (if you don't have recent ones)
- Get familiar with the tools we use
- Experiment with food logging
- Start prepping your pantry and grocery list
- Ask questions and get comfortable with the process
The goal here is to help you feel prepared and clear on the plan, and set up for success once the core program starts on April 9.
Then we introduce with structured changes
On April 9, we begin the core program with small, structured changes, spaced out intentionally over 10 weeks. Instead of overhauling your diet all at once, you focus on one meal at a time:
- First breakfast during week 1
- Then lunch at week 2
- Then dinner at week 3
- Then snacks at week 4
- And so on…
Each week builds on the last. There’s a sequence to it, so you’re not trying to solve everything at once.
For each week, we teach a principle, not rigid rules.
For example, when we talk about breakfast, we teach smoothies as an illustrative tool. Not because you have to drink smoothies, but because they’re a simple way to demonstrate how to build a balanced meal using fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains.
Personally, I can’t do smoothies when it's still cold out.
So I apply that same principle to a warm oatmeal bowl with coconut milk and berries.
That flexibility is the point.
We provide six weeks of meal plans, but we don’t expect you to follow them perfectly — or even at all. They’re there as inspiration while you experiment and figure out what works best for you.
And throughout the program, we review your food logs and make adjustments to be sure your choices meet your nutrition needs. You’re not left wondering if you’re “doing it right.”
Without that kind of structure and guidance, it’s easy to keep gathering more information while still feeling uncertain about what actually applies to you — or whether you’re focusing on the right things for your kidneys.
We don’t expect perfect eating.
We know real life happens, and we prepare you for it. That’s why we also teach skills for:
- Snacking
- Eating out
- Busy weeks
- Travel and vacations
The goal is for you to keep living your life while learning how to support your kidneys, not to put everything on hold or feel like one off day ruins your progress.
RenAlign is built around sustainability.
If you’ve been hesitant because you’re worried about making drastic changes or doing this “wrong,” I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what to expect.
The program is designed to meet you where you are and give you a clear plan forward so you’re not left navigating kidney nutrition through guesswork.
