Here's exactly how fluency grids work ... and how to use them.
One of the most common questions I get is some version of this: "This sounds great, but I have no idea how I would fit it into my day."
So today I want to show you exactly what a fluency grid is and give you five ways to use it starting this week.
Here's the basic idea.
A fluency grid is a simple table with five words from a specific phonics pattern. Those same words repeat across every row, but in a different order each time.
Students read across each row, and because the words keep reappearing in a new sequence, they can't just memorize the pattern of the line. They have to read each word.
Ideas for fitting fluency grids into your day
Whole Class: Project the grid on the screen. Students read each word silently, then read aloud together when you point.
Small Group: Echo read the first row, choral read the second, and then have students finish independently while you listen in.
Partner Practice: One student reads the white rows, one reads the gray rows. They swap when they finish.
Independent Practice: Students read the grid on their own during center time or as a warm-up.
Homework: Send the grid home with a simple note for parents. It's short, focused, and easy to explain.
