Ever wonder what travelers leave behind in unclaimed baggage?
According to an annual report from Unclaimed Baggage, while over 99.9% of all checked bags eventually find their way to their owners, the ones that don’t often tell a story. Notably, since 1970, the company has been giving lost luggage a second life in partnership with airlines. The practice started as a scrappy idea but has turned into a sustainable business that saves luggage from being taken to landfills (1,330 tons in 2025).
As the company’s team sorted through unclaimed luggage in 2025, they claimed the most interesting finds were a fully assembled robot, a bionic knee, 10K gold diamond grills, a meteorite, and a pair of Fire Poi. Unsurprisingly, the report found that the most commonly found items in lost luggage are shirts (209,986), pants (128,722), jewelry (57,623), mobile phones (51,499), and shoes (48,736).
The team, which includes experts in authenticating luxury goods, also found an assortment of designer brands among the lost bags. Included in the most valuable were a pair of white diamond earrings, Men’s Rolex watches, a Balenciaga leather jacket, Chanel handbags, a Tom Ford trench coat, and Louis Vuitton bags.
Standout finds from the report include a look into the year that are culturally significant. For example, the report found that travelers had “packed more pop collectibles than ever, from Labubus and PopMart blind boxes to nostalgic and limited-edition items.” And viral “fashion” items on the rise included not only a lot of Trader Joe’s bags but leaned into trends like the “fisherman core” and butter yellow aesthetics from the summer. There was also a shift towards more attainable luxury with brands like Essentials Fear of God being seen more frequently as well as lab grown diamonds.
Still, we’re not exactly looking to lose our luggage to fuel a story. Executives at the brand said that the best ways to make sure to get your bags returned safely are:
Label your bags inside and out.
Make your bag stand out (black bags are the most commonly lost).
Arrive early when you’re checking a bag! Late check-ins are more likely to miss a flight.
Use a Bluetooth tracker to find a bag quicker if it does go missing.
