An Oral History of the Vanity Fair Oscar Party |
Because you’re reading this newsletter, you probably know that the 98th annual Academy Awards will be held March 15—and that they will be followed, once more, by the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. But the party hasn’t been around for all 98 of those years. Here, Elise Taylor takes a deep dive into this magazine’s signature event, which was launched in 1994 by then editor Graydon Carter. As he told Taylor: “Nobody was going to the Oscars anymore. It was considered much cooler to have somebody else accept an Oscar for you. But I thought we could tell the Hollywood story back to itself, that we could capture that trading asset of Hollywood: glamour.”
Elsewhere, the VF team tries to predict who will actually win at a suddenly very unpredictable Oscar ceremony; Esther Zuckerman looks back at the best Oscar dresses of all time; Kase Wickman presents a survey of Julia Fox’s most unforgettable VF Oscar Party looks; and we take you inside another after-party, the one held at Milk Studios following Sunday’s Actor Awards. |
