Where Should Californians Relocate?

Texas snags another corporate refugee, but there are other possible destinations.

Add another business to the membership rolls of the California Flight Club. After more than half a century in the Golden State, Public Storage is leaving for Texas. In one of the stranger phenomena of our strange political times, California is now home to both of the Democratic Party’s leading presidential contenders and also home to millions of the country’s leading candidates to flee Democratic governance. Former Vice President Kamala Harris and current California Gov. Gavin Newsom may take a while before formally announcing their political plans. But for years now Californians have been off and running to more sensibly governed jurisdictions.

Iris Kwok reports for the Los Angeles Times on Public Storage, the latest corporate refugee from the land of expensive progressive dysfunction:

The largest self-storage brand in the U.S. has been based in Southern California since its founding in 1972 in El Cajon. The company operates more than 3,500 self-storage facilities across 40 U.S. states and has more than 5,000 employees.

Public Storage joins a long and distinguished list of businesses that have moved from the left coast to the Lone Star State. Ms. Kwok notes some prominent recent departures:

Last year the hair care company John Paul Mitchell Systems moved from Southern California to Wilmer, Texas, and the green energy company GAF moved from San José to Georgetown, Texas.

In 2024, Chevron announced plans to move its headquarters from San Ramon to Houston after years of butting heads with politicians in Sacramento over climate and energy policies.
