There’s a lot of mixed messaging right now about comprehension strategies.

Some people say we shouldn’t teach them at all.
Others say they don’t transfer.
Others say background knowledge is the only thing that matters.

In my newest YouTube video, I step back and ask a much more useful question:

Which comprehension strategies are actually worth sustained instructional time?

To answer that, I first explain why comprehension instruction has to start with the text - not a strategy list - and why strategy overload has made comprehension feel so murky for so many teachers.

Then I narrow the focus.

Not to everything we could teach.

​But to the practices that consistently support students in building meaning as they read.
