From the DMV to Milan: Meet the Team USA athletes with local ties

Team USA is gearing up for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Among the Olympians representing the U.S., nine have lived in the DMV at one point or another.

From Fairfax to Baltimore, local athletes have sled and skated their way to the world stage. Notable names include bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, “Quad God” Ilia Malinin and skeleton racer Mystique Ro.

What and when are the first medal events at the 2026 Winter Olympics?

The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics feature more than 100 medal events across 16 different sports. But when will the first medals be awarded in Italy?

The Winter Olympics action kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 4, and events will continue in the lead-up to the Opening Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 6 at the San Siro in Milan.

Then, on Saturday, Feb. 7, medals will be up for grabs in five different sports: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding and speed skating.
