Josh McDaniels was asked Monday at Super Bowl Opening Night if he ever wants to be an NFL head coach again.
“I appreciate the question, but I’m going to be ‘One day at a time’ for the rest of my career,” the Patriots offensive coordinator said. “I’m where I’m supposed to be, and I’m happy being here, and can’t wait for this week.”
McDaniels, 49, is not naïve. He knows he has a reputation as a “great coordinator, lousy head coach” after going 20-33 over four seasons with the Broncos and Raiders. He knows coaches rarely get a third chance as a head coach. In a league obsessed with offensive play-callers, McDaniels wasn’t on any team’s interview list this offseason.
McDaniels also genuinely loves New England. He arrived here fresh-faced in 2001, won six Super Bowl rings over 17 years, and raised four kids in the Boston suburbs. When he left for Las Vegas in 2022, his family stayed behind.
But McDaniels is certainly making the most of his third stint calling plays for the Patriots (2006-08, ’12-21, ‘25), and giving the 31 other NFL owners something to think about for the future.
