The Measured Mom

When teachers ask whether comprehension instruction looks different in kindergarten and third grade, the short answer is yes.

And also no.

The how looks different.
But the underlying thinking is the same.

In both grades, we start by choosing text that matters.
That might be fiction or nonfiction.
Read alouds in kindergarten.
Texts that students read themselves in third grade.

But in both cases, the text is the starting point.

We’re thinking ahead of time about what vocabulary needs attention.

We’re paying attention to sentences.
We do activities like sentence expansion or sentence combining in both grades. They're just simpler in kindergarten.

And in both grades, we’re intentionally building background knowledge so that students are equipped to make inferences.

The difference between kindergarten and third grade isn’t whether we do these things.

It’s how they vary in complexity.

If you’re wondering whether my upcoming workshop is for you, here’s the short answer.

If you teach kindergarten, first, second, or third grade - or if you teach older students who struggle with reading - the answer is yes.

In Building Comprehension from the Ground Up, we’ll unpack what comprehension instruction should involve, bust common myths, and walk through how to plan around a text so students are supported as they read or listen.

P.S. This 90-minute session is hosted on Zoom, where you'll be invited to unmute if you like and interact with me in real time.

After the workshop, we’ll have a live Q&A. Ask your questions in the chat or take yourself off mute. I’ll stay until we’ve worked through them. Register now before the price goes up.

Just a note
We are currently rebranding from The Measured Mom, which was our business name for 13 years. Because of that, you will still see themeasuredmom.com on many of our resources. We hope to complete the entire transition by the end of 2026.
