Dear aaa,
After wildfires ravaged the Overberg region of the Western Cape in South Africa, our friends at Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary faced their greatest challenge yet. The sanctuary, home to rescued captive-bred lions, leopards, tigers, caracals and servals, was caught directly in the path of an uncontrollable wildfire placing both animals and staff in immediate danger.
The destruction was immense. Several enclosures were lost, infrastructure was damaged and many animals were left distressed, with some suffering minor injuries and second‑degree burns.
In the midst of all this chaos, Panthera Africa had no choice but to temporarily relocate their animals to safety with trusted partner sanctuaries.
As the situation unfolded, FOUR PAWS was asked to help, and we mobilised to carry out the emergency relocation these rescued big cats so urgently needed. |

Among those rescued are the magnificent king lions Chaka, Oliver and Neptune. They were transported to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, where they will receive ongoing specialised care, and will be closely monitored, treated, and supported as they recover.
“Our hearts go out to the Panthera Africa team during this incredibly difficult time,” says Fiona Miles, Director at FOUR PAWS South Africa. “When they asked for help, we were ready to stand alongside them and ensure these lions have a safe place to recover while the Panthera Africa team assesses the situation and determines its next steps.”
Panthera Africa co‑founder Lizaene Cornwall shared:
“Seeing our animals leave their home under these circumstances has been heartbreaking. But knowing they are safe and cared for by FOUR PAWS gives us hope.”
Right now, we urgently need your help. In this moment your support matters more than ever. The cost of emergency rescues, specialised care, food, and ongoing medical care is significant — and these lions cannot recover without sustained support.
Your donation today makes you part of their survival story.
By giving now, you help ensure that Chaka, Oliver and Neptune receive the care, and safety they deserve, and stand with both FOUR PAWS and Panthera Africa as they begin the long road towards healing and recovery. |
Thank you for showing compassion when it matters most.
Warm regards,
Natalie Hood
