On a more personal front, I constantly feel like I'm living in the future when I type in 2026. The year 2079 - the date I chose for the beginning of the Psy-Changeling series - suddenly doesn't seem that far away. Neither, sadly, do the core elements around which the entire series spins.

At its heart, the series is about empathy, about how a society collapses if it forgets love and freedom and treats kindness as a flaw to be crushed. When we become so insular that we "other" anyone we see as an outsider, we risk losing our very humanity.
