| It was “Ladies Day” at the range. Blaire White had her hands wrapped around a pink Glock 17 that she had turned into a rifle with the help of a conversion kit. It’s one of more than a dozen guns Blaire owns, plus a pink flamethrower branded with her initials, “BW.” She was spraying bullets at a multicolored paper skeleton named “Vital Dude.” Blaire shot the Dude 11 times. Then she placed the gun on a counter next to a pink AR-15. “A lot of people talk about how it’s a good stress reliever, and it is,” the 32-year-old YouTuber said on the way to the range. She drove a Mustang — which used to be pink, too, until she took the vinyl wrapping off in the hope of selling it ahead of an impending move to California. She’s nervous about the gun laws there. Her Glock 17 is legal, and the conversion kit is legal, but you can’t put the two together. So she will have to transform the pink rifle back into a handgun. “If anything,” Blaire says, “I’m losing rights by going back to California.” There are many ways to understand Blaire White. Here’s one: She is a trans woman in Donald Trump’s America who, when she talks about losing her rights, appears primarily concerned with losing her guns. |
