A new cartoon for you, drawn just now in anticipation of the snowstorm soon to descend on many of us. It does seem serious, but nobody’s sure where it will go or how much snow we will get. I already adjusted my train schedule to be sure. Everyone stay safe! I wrote about Trump’s speech yesterday at Davos, but want to share this from Tom Nichols of The Atlantic, via Heather Cox Richardson: “No one can be watching this Davos speech and reach any conclusion but that the President of the United States is mentally disturbed and that something is deeply wrong with him. This is both embarrassing and extremely dangerous.” Trump gave in on his Greenland (which he called Iceland numerous times during his speech, which his people have denied) idea. It was remarkable to watch him try to save face. I’m happy for Greenland, although they are understandably wary. Trump has done damage to our European relationships. Also, during his rambling Davos speech yesterday, he again asserted that the 2020 election was stolen and said: “People will soon be prosecuted for what they did. It’s probably breaking news but it should be. It was a rigged election. You can’t have rigged elections.” The man who investigated Trump’s attempt to steal the election, Jack Smith, is testifying right now at a public hearing of the House Judiciary Committee. He has a soft voice and is extremely deliberate in his choice of words. House members are firing questions at him, speaking quickly, and Smith always takes a beat before he answers. The pause of silence is noticable. Man after my own heart, as a deliberate and slow speaker myself. The veteran prosecutor is telling the public what he’s already told lawmakers behind closed doors: “A jury would have found Trump guilty of a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, had Smith been able to move forward with the evidence he amassed during his time as special counsel with the Biden Department of Justice.” Thirty two people have died while in ICE custody since the raids have begun. In one case of an ICE detainee who was killed, an autopsy report classifies his death as a homicide. The report from the county medical examiner said the detainee, Geraldo Lunas Campos, was asphyxiated and restrained by law enforcement. Federal officials described his death as a suicide. So very sad. ICE must be stopped as soon as possible. But it may not happen until the Democrats control Congress. Finally, some hope for the midterms: people are not happy with Trump, a new poll shows: Thanks for being here! See you tomorrow. I’m sure to draw more snow cartoons over the weekend. One of my favorite topics! Have a good Thursday, keep strong. |
