Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the Big To-Do: Short Cuts, our midweek round-up of what’s going on around Boston, as selected by Boston Globe critics and writers.

Thursday

  • Ralph Fiennes returns in the latest zombie-filled sequel “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” opening in theaters.

  • Fiennes also stars in the new WWI British drama “The Choral,” hitting the big screen as well.

  • The Boston Celtic Music Festival returns this weekend with shows in Somerville and Cambridge through Sunday.

  • Helena Bonham-Carter, Martin Freeman, and others star in Netflix’s “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.”

Friday

  • Celebrate 100 years of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with a pair of shows at Scullers Jazz Club.

  • New York comic Sunny Laprade showcases her new hour of stand-up with a stop at Somerville’s The Rockwell.

  • Live performances of “Stokely and Martin” take over Cambridge’s Multicultural Arts Center Friday through Sunday.

  • SpeakEasy Stage Company’s psychological thriller “Job” kicks off its run at Calderwood Pavilion on Friday.

Saturday

  • Washington, D.C. trio the String Queens brings its jazzy pop sound to Cambridge’s Regattabar.

  • Shawn Carter brings his interactive game show to the Comedy Studio.




Sunday

  • Head back to Westeros with the latest “Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” premiering on HBO.

  • New England Conservatory hosts a free barn dance event as part of its contemporary musical arts program.

Ongoing

  • “The Great Privation (how to flip ten cents into a dollar)” continues its run at Suffolk University’s Modern Theatre through Jan. 31.
  • From googly eyes to rocket ships, WINTERACTIVE brings all sorts of eye-catching public art to town through the end of March.

Last Chance

  • “The Sound of Music” ends its run at Citizens Opera House on Sunday.
