Google is testing another change that could further reduce clicks from search. When you tap “Show more” on certain AI Overviews, you might be pushed directly into Google’s AI Mode. Instead of expanding sources or sending users to websites, Google opens a full AI chat where people can keep asking follow-up questions. In other words, the search journey stays inside Google. If it sticks, fewer users will ever reach publisher sites, especially for informational and research-heavy queries. The implication is clear: relying on clicks alone is becoming riskier. Brands that aren’t cited, referenced, or clearly understood by AI models are easier to skip over entirely.
