Let’s just get it out of the way: No, we had no idea that Teyana Taylor, our winter issue cover star, would win at the Golden Globes on Sunday!! (Several friends have asked me this over text! These awards shows really do keep these things under wraps!) But would I say I’m surprised she took home the best-supporting-actress award for her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in One Battle After Another? No, I am not. I met with Taylor a few times this fall for this profile, while the whirlwind of OBAA and the buzz around her performance was getting louder by the day. In fact, during our first interview, I hadn’t even seen the film yet, but when she spoke at length about the many dimensions and struggles of Perfidia, you could see how much the role had affected her, and how much she had connected with this complicated character. Of course, once I saw it myself, I could see where all of this momentum was coming from. We spoke about how she pulls off this juggling act (working, motherhood, romance, and culinary school), but mostly she talked about how much this moment has meant, how grateful she was for all of it. I couldn’t help but root for her! |

These days, it’s almost like you can’t get away from Teyana Taylor. Having just won a Golden Globe, she’s a favorite for an Oscar nomination for her role in One Battle After Another. And she did a TV show too, Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair with Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts, and Niecy Nash-Betts. Or maybe I should say they all did these projects with Taylor, whose star seems to be reaching new heights after years of persistence in the entertainment industry. When asked about Taylor, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon sang her nothing but praises. “She is literally incapable of striking a false note,” the latter told VF.
Taylor is soaking up the moment. “I could never look at how busy I am and complain because it’s like, this is everything I ever prayed for, you got it now. Ain’t no turning back.” |
